"The human face ... for me this is the most interesting thing in the world... the human face reflecting the life that was... and life now.."
Ekaterina Tolstaya

* * *
Ekaterina (Katya) Tolstaya, an outstanding cultural phenomenon and a charming, energetic woman comes from a Russian family of great traditions and achievement. She was graduated from the St. Petersburg University in 1963 and received her master's degree in biology. I still remember her in the lab in the mid-1970s, when she was isolating non-histone proteins for her project. Later she became seriously involved with painting. Wide recognition came to her in the mid-1970s.

She has had numerous exhibitions in Russia. Her portraits are also to be found in private collections in Russia, countries of the former Soviet Union (Georgia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan) as well as in France, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, Sweden, and the United States. Painting session with her is a unique and almost a mystical experience according to some of those, whom she painted. Katya is somehow capable of entering into the inner world of her subjects, revealing depths which may have remained unknown even to those whom she paints.

The portraits selected for this site come from her exhibitions in Moscow.
